America : Here and Now

America Here and Now is an ambitious project to bring our country together in these fractious political times. This group of artists will travel across the country stopping in cities and communities to stage art experiences. Their hope is that it will renew the appreciation for creativity in our society as well and ignite conversations through the catalyst of art.

Their thoughts: "Conversations will explore themes such as great American journeys, special memories, hopes for our country, and the roles innovation and creativity must play in our future.
America: Now and Here presents a cross-disciplinary experience in visual art, poetry, music, theater, and film as the foundation for engaging audiences in a unique American experience. Through art, people will come together for timely dialogues about America, sharing their insights, ideas, and points of view. Through the America: Now and Here experience, everyone can participate in an exciting national conversation and contribute to this historic American journey."

The first stop of the tour is in Kansas City. It kicks off tomorrow and runs through the 28th. I deifnitely think this is day trip worthy. Check out the calendar of events and website for more info.

Tackling Thai Food : Chim's Thai Kitchen

Thai food in Columbia has been a challenge for me. Too much of it seems like Chinese food with peanut sauce thrown on it. I tried everyone's favorites and had a few dishes here and there that became favorites. But overall, I had written off Thai food in Columbia, Missouri.

Until last week when I met my pal Scott at the new Chim's location. He'd been sining the praises of the Jefferson City location to me as long as I had know him. But he had never brought me any despite repeated requests. I could have made it out to Cooper's Landing and had some for myself (they run the Thai truck there) but somehow bike riding + outside with bugs didn't = Thai for me. So lunch was my first Chim's experience.

We ordered the Tom Yum Kai soup to share and each got one of our Thai faves. I went with the Laab and Scott got the Pad Kra Pao. I asked for a spice level of seven while Scott kicked it up to nine. Since Marcia Vanderlip was there writing a story for the Tribune, our food was served to us by Chim herself.

And then my taste buds were happy. Finally Thai dishes that were subtle and layered. It takes skill to make fish sauce tickle your taste buds instead of walloping your jaw. My baselines (Laab and Tom Yum Kai) were executed well but it was really Scott's dish that won me over. The balance of Thai basil and peppers hit the mark and the fresh bell peppers added color and crunch. I would go back again and again just to eat it.

Get yourself over there stat. It's in Peachtree but it's less puzzling than most. Take a left at Break Time, and it's down a few feet on your right. Go, eat, and ask for extra fish sauce.

The Purple Dress Project

If you haven't noticed Ashley Hasty already, then let me be the first to tell you about this local blogger and her month long fund raising effort.

I met Ashley through Twitter and when she won a Hoot Design print on the blog, I suggested we have lunch. During lunch I learned about her year long struggle with Crohn's disease. As someone who suffers from an auto-immune disease, I really related to her helplessness and admired her fortitude. Not only did she continue through her PhD program while in and out of the hospital, she decided to take on the disease when she recovered.

Instead of just making a donation or joining a walk (though she is doing both of those things), she decided to combine her love of fashion with her cause and conceived the Purple Dress Project. Every day in April she is wearing the same purple dress to show that living with Crohn's is not something to be ashamed of. She's put a glamorous spin on a very unglamorous disease.

Pouring Missouri Wines

After attending two wine conferences in the first two weeks of April, I have been doing a lot more thinking about what I chose to drink. I admit that I have a love for foreign wines and most of my wine funds go there. But after hearing wineries speak with such passion about their product and hearing Todd Kilman ask why the localvore movement ignores local wine, I am determined to turn over a new leaf.

So while I a plan to cover more Missouri wines here and on my new #winechat page, I also want to put my grapes where my mouth is and start drinking more Missouri wines. So tell me, what do you drink? What's your favorite winery to travel to?

Drink Wine with Me : Drink Local Wine Missouri

This weekend will be a celebration of all things Missouri Wine. The Drink Local Wine conference is pulling up to St. Louis this Saturday to talk regional wine. The Drink Local Wine website has made it their goal to spotlight wine made in the 47 states that aren't California, Washington, and Oregon. It's the brainchild of Washington Post wine columnist Dave McIntyre and wine blogger Jeff Siegel, the Wine Curmudgeon.

As a localvore, I am thrilled to have the chance to attend as part of the local media. I am really looking forward to learning more about Missouri wine. And to hear what some of the national media heavy hitters of wine like Lisa Hall of Wine Business Monthly, Doug Frost, the godfather of regional wine writing, and Eric V. Orange, the founder and CEO of Local Wine Events think of our state's wines. And Todd Kliman, the author of The Wild Vine: A Forgotten Grape and the Untold Story of American Wine, the definitive book about Missouri’s signature grape norton will there too!

But I have to say, since I am an admitted Twitter addict, the thing I am looking forward to most is the Twitter Taste Off. On Saturday afternoon, two dozen Missouri wineries will pour two wines each for the Twitter Taste off. Participants will blog or Tweet about what they've tasted and then the people's choice award will be given to the participants favorite. Olivia Wilder, host of Olivia Wilder Times, will do her radio show live from the event, interviewing the winemakers and wine personalities in attendance.

Ticket packages start at $35. You can check out the schedule of events here. In addition to the Twitter Taste Off, there are talks scheduled for Saturday morning, a buffet reception scheduled for Saturday night, and winery tours scheduled for Sunday afternoon. My own kids are living up in New Orleans with their grandparents. So it really is a spring break for me. Tonight! CoMo Twestival!

If you're one of the many social media junkies in town, then you already have plans to head to Twestival happening tonight at Orr Street Studios from six to nine. If you're not, you're probably wondering just what the heck a Twestival is.

Twestival uses social media for social good by bringing together online communities. This offline event highlights a charity and is also just a great time. Columbia's Twestival is being thrown by the local chapter of Social Media Club and benefits Friends of Boone County Family Resources.

A $10 donation at the door gets you pizza from Shakespeare's, beer from Schlafly, and access to some amazing silent auction items including gift certificates, hand crafted goodies, and some priceless tweets. Former MU players now playing in the NFL have offered to auction off 3 retweets each. @ChaseDaniel, @Ruckersouthside, and @k_rutland have all volunteered to retweet the winning bidder of their auction 3 times. That's almost 100,000 impressions total!

Babymomma or Dogmommy?

More of the furbaby type? You've got to check out Barkitecture, a fundraiser put on by Central Missouri Humane Society and the American Institute of Architects (AIA) Mid-Missouri Chapter.

Teams of local architects will work together to create unique dog houses. Once completed, these dog houses will be displayed for auction with the proceeds benefiting the Central Missouri Humane Society. Barkitecture competitions have taken place nationally, but this will be the first one for Como and for Missouri.

Finished designs will be displayed downtown Columbia, in the Courthouse Lawn during the week of April 3-9 2011. The auction will then be held on Sunday April 10, 2011 at 1:00 p.m. 100% of the proceeds will benefit the CMHS. Executive Director Dr. Alan Allert says “Your dog will be the

talk of the town if they get to lounge in one of these houses in their yard”.

Today starts the True False film festival! I have been checking in volunteers all week at The Butterfly Tattoo so I am already in the spirit. Thanks to all those who offered advice to me in my True False first timer post. I am still not sure what I am going to make it to, but my husband and I did sit down and discuss what we would like to do. High on my list is making it to Jubilee tonight!

True/False First Timer

When we were researching moving to Columbia, True/False topped almost every list of the best things about Columbia. Both being very into documentaries, we couldn't wait to immerse ourselves in it in our first year our living here. Then we remembered that we had two kids and no babysitters. We shrugged our shoulders, put our heads down, and tried to forget it was happening.

So this year we swore we would get my parents in town and dive in. Then a trip popped up for the middle of March that prevented childcare and we realized we would be once again staying home. But a chance to volunteer presented itself to me and all the sudden I find myself with a crazy week that results in a shiny volunteer pass. And no idea what to do with it.

My gracious husband has agreed to watch the kids while I attempt to see a few films. And we've got a babysitter for Thursday with hopes of trying to get into the Jubilee party. I've perused Zac Early's planned film schedule and thoroughly read the True False website. But I would love to get your input: which would be your favored films? Any T/F non film events we should try to make it to?

National Drink Maragritas Day

I really should have planned some kind of educational activity involving the USA or the presidents but instead we will probably end up watching Beauty and the Beast in prep for our Disney trip next month. So why this pointless post, you ask? Well I just had to highlight the awesome 1Canoe2 print above. If you have the day off, head over to Poppy to buy it. Stuck at work? Just for fun though, if you do have the day off how are you spending it? Even if you don't, what's your perfect rainy day in Columbia, MO? Mine would be breakfast at Cafe Berlin, followed by browsing in The District, lunch at Red and Moe, a movie at Ragtag, happy hour at Sycamore, some more lollygalling at the library, then picking up takeout at Cafe Berlin before heading home.

As we drove home from another disappointing new rstaurant tonight (review coming soon), I lamented that we don't get to visit our favorite go to restaurants enough because we're always trying places for the blog. If only there is a way I could kill two birds with one stone. So tell me, what's the place you go to time and time again. Then I can try something new and go for a sure thing.

And just for the record, my go to faves are Sycamore, Olive Cafe, Billiards, and Kampai Alley.

Celebrating National Drink Wine Day in #Como

Evidently today, February 18th, is National Drink Wine day. Who knew? Since I am one to drink wine on any day, it would be wrong not to celebrate this holiday right?

Here are my top three places to drink wine in Columbia, MO.

Top Ten Wines: This is a great spot for trying something new. They usually feature six to ten varietals from seven to twelve dollars. That cost gets you a third of a bottle so take a friend and split a couple. That way you both get to try two different wines over the space a couple of hours. Or ask for two glasses and split the carafe. It's the perfect way to start an evening or have a quick drink before heading home.

Sycamore: I usually go here for the beer but their immensely reasonable happy hour menu always features a red and a white wine too. Go from five to seven and have a glass for $5 or so. This is also one of the few places in town you can always get a glass of Norton.

Les Bourgeois A-Frame: I know this isn't technically in Columbia, but hop a few exits west on I70 and you're drinking wine in one of the most scenic spots in the area. Plus they have great snacks. And I can bring my kids. It's like my living room, but with a gorgeous Missouri river view.

Girl Seeks CSA

This year is my year, the year I finally join a CSA. In case you don't know, CSA stands for Community Supported Agriculture. It's not only a great way to get a nice variety of veggies and fruits but it's also a wonderful way to support your friendly local farmer. We almost joined one last year but we had just moved within biking distance of the Farmers Market and I wanted to make that a weekly stop. But I soon realized that we would visit plenty anyway to get local meats and other specialty goodies like garlic and green onions from Chert Hollow.

And though the snow is just now melting off of our yard, this is the time to be joining up. The best CSAs can fill quickly and if you want to split a share (a good way to ensure you actually use all that fresh produce), you will want to have arrangements settled before you sign up.

Here's a quick run down of some of the CSAs I am considering:

DanJo Farms: A certified natural farm, DanJo offers a highly customizable CSA program. You can add on eggs, meats, fruits, bread, and jams, sauces and pickles. Their summer share runs from May until October and they offer a payment plan. Like what you get? There's a winter CSA too. Click through to their information page for more details.

Happy Hollow Farm: An certified organic farm they offer both working on nonworking shares that can be bought at various levels. The summer CSA runs from Mid-May until October and if you're a fan, they also offer a winter CSA. Shares contain seasonal vegetables and fruits; the two pickup spots in Columbia, both at private homes. Click here for more details.

Pierpont Farms: In addition to veggies, this farm also offers poultry and eggs. They are not certified organic but use many of the same farming techniques. Pickup on their farm and you can also cut herbs and flowers to take home with your share. You can also pick up your veggies at the Farmers Market on Wednesdays. Summer CSA starts in Mid-May and runs for 23 weeks. Check out their flyer for all the details.

A Sort of Weekend Guide

Between the girls party, Valentine's Day, Campfire, and my parents being in town I don't have much time to do things this weekend. But if I did this is what I would do:

Thursday:
Go to Uprise Bar: They are tapping their keg of Hopslam at six pm. This will be your last chance to get it on draft in Columbia. Okay, I will actually be doing this one.

Head to the HyVee on Conley: they are having their ladies night in the spirits department. It starts at 6:30 and lasts until 8. There will be door prizes, wine and spirit samples, a chocolate fountain, and a special little something for you when you leave.

Friday:
Got to The District for the Sweet Deal promotion. At several stores, you can sample sweet treats and get varying discounts. Check out The District website for more details.

Sunday: Check out the sweet and cynical sides of Valentine's Day at Theater NXS's Amore Armageddon show. This variety show features Romantics v. Cynics, with audience participation; raffles, comedy, music, sketches all benefiting 5th Wall Productions and Theatre NXS. Doors open 6:00. Details on their website.

Hello readers! Sorry this blog has been so lacking in updates lately. A broken laptop and the Snow Apocalypse have put me rather behind on my digital to do list. In the interest of catching up, here is what I have been up to lately:

In January, our local chapter of Social Media Club launched with a bang. We held a kick off event at Harpo's with drinks and an iPad raffle sponsored by Landmark Bank. I am so excited to have started this local chapter! If you use social media in your job or want to or just like to hang out with people who talk about Whrrling and Tweeting. I hope you will join us! You can read more about the group here.

My D&H Drugstore Shop Local challenge is going well. I visited the winter market a few times and have been forcing myself to take a different route when I run errands so I can find new local places. I have also broken the fast food habit and have been hitting places like Olive Cafe for quick dinners instead. My next task is to find a reasonable local frame shop. Any tips?

One of my resolutions this year was to write more. So I am blogging weekly for the Columbia Tribune's Family Life site. Check it out here. After writing about the girls' special needs last week, I was inspired to restart my "mommy blog". And in case that wasn't enough, I also started a personal site just to talk about what ever pops into my head. Whew.

Lastly, I have been working on a super secret, very cool CoMO centric project. It's not quite ready to be revealed but I am so excited about sharing it with you soon! Watch this space for updates.

One of my resolutions this year was to really track our spending and stick to our budget. Although we already spend a pretty meager amount on groceries, I would love to slash it even more. Couponing doesn't really help me since we rarely buy packaged goods. So I need to find the lowest prices on the staples we buy. The next few weeks I will be tracking prices on our usual staples. Shop Local Challenge

When D&H Drugstore contacted me about doing a sponsored post on the blog, I was thrilled that they wanted me to write about shopping locally. Anyone who knows me knows that local businesses are a huge passion of mine and paying me to write about it is like feeding candy to a baby.

I mean there are so many things I could tell you about shopping locally. How it keeps more money in the community (they return an average of 80% of the dollars spent back into the community.) How local businesses tend to have a lower environmental impact and are less of a tax on public services and infrastructure. And how they preserve a community's uniqueness and character.

To put my money where my mouth is and really work on shopping locally as much as possible this year. The Dishy Decorator: The Dishy Decorator is a former professional decorator from the deep south. Now a stay at home mom here in our slice of the Midwest, she uses her blog to "dish" on all the things she loves including interior design, fashion, and food. She shares recipes, organization strategies, and shopping tips on a regular basis, complete with photos. A couple of my recent favorite posts include a recipe for smoked salmon mini pizzas and shopping links for fashionable winter boots. The DishyDec's vibe is fun with a slightly snarky edge.

Born Just Right: Locally Jen Reeves is know as a social media maven. In addition to her job at KOMU, teaching at Mizzou, and sharing her thoughts on the constantly changing world of new media, Jen also writes a nationally known blog about her daughter Jordan's journey with half a left arm. It would be hard to highlight just a few posts so I recommend checking out Jordan's story and then diving into the blog. Recently, because she evidently is allergic to sleep, Jen helped start the Investigative Mommy Blogger site which aims to offer hard news for real moms.

Building International Coalitions Through Pavement and Beer: On this recently Fresh Pressed blog, local tweeter @zacearly shares his thoughts on beer, music, and life. He has a unique writing style and frequently uses footnotes which are reviled by some but I'm a fan. His post today is about his picks for the five beers you should always keep in the fridge. Click on over and see if you agree.

Drunk on Judgment: These guys take blogging to the next level by offering a full on interactive site with reviews of movies, video games, music, and alcohol. They are my go to resource for reviews on movies and local shows. You know when you check something out on their site, you're going to get a honest and hilarious opinion. Check out their take on two recent Hollywood (hoping to be) hits The Dilemma and The Green Hornet.

Show Me Eats: I swore to myself that I wasn't going to include any locally focused sites since they are already highlighted on my side bar. But I couldn't resist including Scott. Lately he has been expanding blog beyond Missouri food to discussions of food in general. You can always find a recipe or two that you have to try, like his latest for a simple carbonara sauce over Bucatini pasta. And his Weekly Wrap posts are not to be missed.

The Weekend Guide : Brrr

It's official, I have lost my Minnesota cred. Right now I am wearing two sweaters, drinking tea, and still shivering inside at my kitchen table at 11:00am. What I haven't lost is the knowledge that getting out of the house is often the best way to survive the cold. With that in mind, here are some ideas to get you out and about in Columbia this weekend.

Ever seen chainsaw art? Since you don't live in the great white north (and lucky you, wise move!), you probably haven't. But Artrageous Friday is here to help. Local artist Ward Hine will be on City Hill Plaza carving ice into art. Plus there will be ice sculptures all along Broadway. Be sure to stop in the participating locations to check less cold art. You can get a list of locations on the Discover the District website. Artrageous Friday runs from 6pm-9pm.

Last Saturday, as I sat lazing around in my pajamas, Scott from Show Me Eats was up and at em at the Farmer's Market winter market. Check out his post here and get inspired to make your own trip this Saturday morning. Yes it's inside, so you won't freeze. Winter market takes place at Broadway Christian Church at the corner of Green Meadows and Bethel Rd from 10am to 2pm (you even get to sleep in!) Check out the Columbia Farmers Market website for a preview of what you will find featured tomorrow. Spoiler: there will be pastrami sandwiches made from Missouri Legacy Beef.

Need something to lift you out of the doldrums? Head to Alley Cat Yoga Saturday afternoon. At 4pm they are offering a special 1 hour practice of the Sufi tradition of heart chakra meditation by visiting teacher Bhavani Benninghoven. For $5 you can chase away the winter blues. During the winter, nothing gets my blood tingling like spicy food. We haven't yet had a chance to try the newest Indian place Curries but Como Whine and Dine gave it high marks. Its Eastwood Motel location can be hard to find but Robin gives detailed instructions in her post. Know before you go: this place is take out only. Peruse the menu and call ahead your order if you don't want to wait outside in the cold.

None of the above doing it for you? Then hibernate in the warm dark theaters of Ragtag. They are playing two of the Oscar front runners this weekend: Black Swan and The King's Speech. I've seen both and recommend them. There have been a lot of sad Facebook and Twitter updates lately about being the films at Ragtag being sold out. Avoid that by buying tickets on their website at least two hours before the show. Or go with my plan: get there early and drink a beer while you wait.

Artist Spotlight : Photography by Rhiannon Trask

As a personal friend of Rhiannon's, I was pleased as punch when she decided to reopen her sideline photography business this year. Her personality manages to charm a happy picture out of almost everyone. Plus she knows Columbia so well that her location shots really give a feel of the city along with the subjects.

Rhiannon specializes in affordable photography sessions tailored to her subjects' interests. Her philosophy is that photos shouldn't be a luxury saved only for special occasions. I know as a parent, there are too few photos of me with my girls or even just of my husband and I. Outsourcing the snapping ensures we get a few pictures with all four of us in them.

If you would like to capture some moments yourself, Rhiannon is doing Valentine's Day mini-sessions this Sunday, January 30, from 9am until 4pm. Each 15-minute sitting includes fun v-day props, and you will
receive 5-10 print-quality, copyright-released digital images. The cost is $25 per child or $25 per adult couple. Rhiannon can also design Valentine's Day cards for you for an extra $25 (a digital file that you will be able to print from).

Monday Giveaway : Red Mango

When Red Mango quietly opened on Broadway this month, I was intrigued enough by their logo to check their website out. Maybe I am easy to convince, but I liked what I saw. So this past Sunday I went over with Twin B (also know as Calamity Jane if you follow me on Twitter) to check it out.

Red Mango was started by Daniel Kim in South Korea. He brought it to the US where it's been spreading like wildfire. Their angle is fresh ingredients, interesting flavors, and an emphasis on probiotics and natural ingredients (gluten free by the way).

The shop itself was not what I was expecting. It has an upscale coffee shop vibe and the layout takes some getting used to. But the workers are eager to bound out from behind the counter and show you the ropes. There are ten to fourteen flavors available each day and you can try as many samples as you want before serving yourself and heading over to the register.

Of course there is a topping bar where you can add to your creation but honestly the flavors were pretty darn tasty by themselves. Each store is free to create their own flavors (often from customers' suggestions) but some of the company standards are pumpkin pie, Pom pomegranate, Ghirardelli chocolate, key lime pie, blueberry, wildberry hibiscus,and so on.

In addition to the yogurt they also sell smoothies, iced teas, tea chillers (tea blended with frozen yogurt), and parfaits. The smoothies are a good choice since the regular sizes manage to stay at a reasonable calorie count (almost all are under 300 calories) unlike some chain places (*cough* Jamba Juice*cough*). If you're a fan the store is able to cater these, and other products, at your event. They also do profit sharing fundraisers where a 20% of certain time period's sales go to a local non-profit (contact the store for details.)

The franchise location opened here in Columbia is the chain's 100th store and there will be a celebration on Saturday with the first 100 customers getting their treats for 10 cents an ounce rather than the normal 45 cents. And you could get lucky and win of the prizes they are giving away including t-shirts, free smoothies, and, for one lucky student, free froyo for the semester.

Or you could make your own luck and enter the win a gift certificate and one of the Red Mango tshirts which are not only cool but also give you a dollar off when you wear it into the store. Date Night (Morning) Giveaway : Go Mizzou Women's Basketball!

Let's face it, after this cold weather, we're all a little stir crazy. It is warming up to the toasty thirties this weekend so it's time to get yourself out of the house. Why not take your partner, friends, family, or neighbors to see a game Saturday morning. The women of Mizzou Basketball are taking on the Texas A&M Aggies (as a former Longhorn I say "BOO!").

Tip-off is at 11 a.m., and it will be broadcast on Fox Sports Midwest. Tomorrow's game is "Mascot Mania" and Columbia Public Schools Day so it's the perfect game to take your kids to. Representatives from The Callaway Bank will be passing out stickers and coloring pages to kids at the game. And at halftime the bank's C.B. Squirrel and Truman plan to shoot hoops with a couple of their other mascot friends.

Artist Spotlight : Little Red Cozette

One thing I love about living in Columbia is that there appears to be an endless amount of creative people here. Being non crafty/artistically inclined myself, I especially love stumbling upon local artists. Today while following #SnowApocalypse 2011 on Twitter I found this tweet and laughed my ass off.

It came from Cozette Lehman, a local writer and graphic artist, who often works under the name little red cozette. A graduate of Mizzou, of course, she's done visual arts work for various groups around town. Lately she's brought her talents to the Citizen Jane Festival. She helped named and designed the poster for the Friday Night Entertainment, as well as working on visuals aspects of the festival.

Local Landmarks : Bucket List

Visit all the local museums. There's a lot of hidden art and artifacts in Columbia and I want to see them all.
Experience The Zou. I don't know if I will shell out for a game but I would love to go at least once.
Spend more time on the Katy Trail. Ideally I would love to bike it this summer but I will start small and just resolve to spend more time walking it.
Take a canoe or kayak trip on the Missouri River.
Visit the Shryock's Corn Maze. The girls' age held us back this year but next Fall we're going. Plus the girls will earn the Campfire Corn Maze badge. Win/win.
Spend time at each of the city's parks instead of just visiting our favorites over and over.
March in a parade. Surely one of the groups the girls are in will afford us this small city experience.
Go to Art in the Park, Heritage Days, and any other Como Classic festival that we meant to hit but weren't able to.

Local Landmarks : Shelter Gardens

When we first moved here we only had one car. So on days I took my husband to work the girls and I would often wander around Shelter Gardens for a bit. It's nice to have a place where you can pretend you live the 19th century life, strolling through manicured gardens on a sunny day. Children were probably better behaved in the 19th century but another thing I love about the gardens is that no one is bothered by the girls' screams. In fact, power walking employees seem to find it charming. Or, at the very least, amusing.

My love for the gardens was ramped up come summer when the music series started. We live a short distance away and it's nice to be able to hop over at the last minute to hear music. I admit that sometimes I miss things about living in a big city, but Shelter Gardens is the antidote to that. It's lovely to be able to do a summer event without warlike preparations (hello Shakespeare in the Park Dallas).

I encourage you to head over there during the winter as well. It's obviously not as vibrant but it's quieter and still lovely in a different way.

Sometimes holiday shopping can be difficult, especially if you are trying to buy for that person who really does have everything. In those cases, you can't go wrong with something consumable. At least you know it will get put to good use. So here are my favorite Columbia consumable gifts.

Who doesn't love chocolate? Grinches, that's who. But even they might have their hearts grown to normal size with a bite of a bar from Columbia's own artisan chocolate maker Patric Chocolate. You can pick up single bars of the PBJ OMG, Signature Dark Milk, and Signature 70% Blend at area store like Root Cellar and Hy-Vee or pick up a set of 7 on their website. They also have a booth at the Farmers Market winter market. I am also a huge fan of the chocolate covered potato chips from the Candy Factory. If you want to make someone feel like a kid again, just bring them a gift from there.

Wine is almost always a welcome gift. Even if the recipient doesn't love it, they can easily regift it. And if they are wine drinkers, and you're lucky, they will often open it up right there and then and share it with you. It's the gift that keep on giving! To you! One of my favorite wines to give is the Les Bourgeois Brut. Sparkling always says holiday to me and this one has a great not too sweet taste. Another favorite is Stone Hill's Norton. This dry red is as Missouri as it gets.You can pick the Brut up at the winery and the Norton at local Hy-Vee stores.

If you have someone you need to impress or want to get your out of state relatives something special, check out Hoss's Market and Rotisserie's gift baskets. There's several to chose from but my pick is the Made in Missouri basket which contains seven products made right here in the Show Me State. At $58.99 it's a splurge but at least you know it won't get shoved in a drawer.

Looking to keep your gift super local? You can't go wrong gifting someone with a jar of jam from Cthulu Kitchens. Give them a call and see what they still have in stock. Or you could buy someone a big jar of my latest Como obsession: Isabel's Country Mustard. There's something about the label that makes me happy. And you can duck into Root Cellar and get a jar and be on your way.

Weekend Guide : Holiday Movies

This weekend we are going to see a small break in the arctic like temperatures. It will warm up to the thirties, positively toasty! So no more cocooning yourself inside. Get out there and enjoy it!

Just in case you've been dying to wear your candy cane sweater somewhere, I wanted to alert you to an Ugly Sweater Party tonight at Sideshow. Admission is $2 if you bring canned goods for their food drive.

If you want to avoid the holiday shoppers and crowds, trot yourself down to Ragtag for two decidedly non holiday movies playing this weekend. You can check out 127 Hours or The Tillman Story both of which will be eggnog free.

If you're on the opposite end of the spectrum and do want to indulge in holiday craziness, head over to the Amory Saturday night and check out a free screening of Jingle All the Way at 6pm. The you can drive over to the Douglass and Central Columbia area which, according to Vox is the place to see holiday lights in town. Check out the sections west to West Boulevard N, north to Business Loop 70, east to Rangeline, and south to Ash and Park Avenue.

Sunday night go to see the story of that other guy born on Christmas. The Mid-Missouri Peaceworks is screening Monty Python's Life of Brian at the Peace Nook. Show starts at 7pm.

Also on Sunday is the holiday concert at Unity Center followed by a BYOC cookie reception. The concert starts at 4pm and afterwards you can check out the other Magic Tree.

Local Landmarks : The Arc

Since I started the blog, I have especially enjoyed doing this series of posts sponsored by Landmark Bank. Heading off to local landmarks has given me a chance to get to know my new city. But with my last few posts I wanted to feature the landmarks that made Columbia, Missouri really feel like home.

The Arc was one of the first images I had of Columbia. When my husband was here interviewing for his job, I sat down to Google our possible new town and came across a picture of two kids playing in their indoor pool. Ah yes, I thought this is a place I will be a lot.

And though I don't make it there as much as I should, it has been a great place for our family to hang out. We even regularly take out of town guests there for open swim. I mean, how many gyms have their own water slide? And the track is a great place to get some sunshine on a cold day. If you ever have time to loiter in the lobby, take the time to read about the architecture of the building and how they worked to incorporate functionality into the design.

For me the result is a happy marriage of striking design and great use of space. I have even come to have a soft spot for the slightly menacing ceiling swimmer.

Yesterday afternoon, I was able to escape the snow for a very special holiday event sponsored by Missouri Wines at Vault. Along with other local bloggers and tweeters, I was able to sample several different Missouri sparkling wines. Each one was paired with a cupcake created by Bleu's pastry chef. When we left, we were given a wonderful goody bag filled with cool stuff from local merchants. Needless to say, it wasn't my normal Sunday afternoon.

Shopping the Catacombs Market at North Village

Last night I headed over to the Holiday Catacombs art market at North Village. This w3as my first time walking through all of the catacombs and I loved the squirrely hiding places and teeny rooms full of art. If you still need some gifts or just want a fun way to spend the day, head over from 10am to 5pm today. There will also be a Scandinavian Christmas celebration from Sven's and vendors selling seasonal drinks.

Here are a few of my favorite things from last night:

Life.Soap.Simple, started by Kristi Mott after her son had allergic reactions to most commercial soaps and lotions, has a room full of wares. I especially loved her exfoliating soaps. For the men in your life, she even has a soap made with beer. Most things were around $5 so they would make great stocking stuffers or coworker gifts. Check out these super cute popsicle soaps:

For the person who always wanted a pony, you tell them to give up on their dreams or you could buy them one of the handmade ones from Designs by 13 Horses. These stuffed creations come in all sorts of patterns and retail for $25.

In the totally unique category, I loved these snake scarves

Perfect for kids or someone with a sense of humor. They retail for $29.

For teacher gifts, hostess gifts, for the person who has everything, or just for yourself stop by the Cthulu Kitchens table. The jams were almost gone last night (they're that good) but she had blackberry, ginger, and plum. You can also buy handmade salves and handwarmers. Those handwarmers will come in handy since it is going to be freezing tomorrow.

Weekend Guide : Let it snow (or rain)

If you haven't seen the forecast, the predicted snow has turned into rain and I for one am disappointed. Not only because I love seeing it fall but also because rain will put a damper on some of the events I want to head to this weekend. Well, like the mailmen, neither rain nor sleet will keep us from the following.

Friday night you can head down to the Artrageous Catacombs winter market from 4pm to 9pm and check out work from local artisans. I plan to blaze back to the house and post about my picks so you can check it out and head back on Saturday. They will be doing it all over again then from 10am to 5pm and enjoy a Scandanavian Christmas celebration and seasonal drinks in addition to the market.

Saturday morning check out the Columbia Farmers Market winter market from 10am to 2pm at the Rock Bridge Christian Church, corner of Green Meadows & Bethel Roads.If your kids are a fan of the stone soup folktale, there will be a demonstration on how to make the real thing.

Saturday afternoon head out to Shryocks Big Red Barn for a barnwarming event from 1Canoe2 from 1pm to 5pm. They will be selling their wares along with other local artisans Hoot Design Co, Animalia Pottery, Lily Dawson Jewelry (and more!) There will also be a bonfire and s'more making. Stop on your way out of town at Donut D-Light from some road snacks of Christmas cookies.

If you need a break from the holidays, go check out the Stephens College Senior Dance Concert Saturday night. "The culmination of personal dance experiences is reflected in the choreography of graduating dance majors." Admission: $8, general; $6 student/senior. The event takes place at 7:30 at Warehouse Theatre, 104 Willis Ave.

On Sunday afternoon, give your pet the star turn they deserve and take them to Lizzi and Rocco's for pet photos with Santa. $10 gets you a 5x7 and a sheet of wallets (perfect for Christmas cards). You can get additional sheets for $5. All proceeds benefit the Central Missouri Humane Society.

Local Landmarks : The Columbia Library

Since I started the blog, I have especially enjoyed doing this series of posts sponsored by Landmark Bank. Heading off to local landmarks has given me a chance to get to know my new city. But with my last few posts I wanted to feature the landmarks that made Columbia, Missouri really feel like home.

As a an obsessive reader, the library in any town is always one of my favorite places. So you can imagine my delight upon walking into our library for the first time. And when I found out that they don't charge any late fees, I wanted to move in.

And what a nice home I would have. I have expressed my appreciation before for building that marry architecture and usability and the library does it beautifully. There are so many things I love about it: the airy magazine reading mezzanine, the playful kids area (that we are always on the verge of being kicked out of for bot using our library voices), the cool tile art in the lobby, helpful clerks and an amazing website, cool carpet, and stairs that I don't mind climbing.

Most of all I love driving by this amazing building and sculpture everyday and feeling proud that it's something my small city chooses to spend money on.

Como Gift Guides : Gifts for Kids

Oh to be a kid again. The holidays are a magical time when you are surrounded by colored lights, get to eat sweets, and are presented with cool stuff. If you want to be the one giving that one magical gift that doesn't get tossed aside like wrapping paper, check out these options from local retailers.

If you want to go truly local for one very special kid this year, check out the wood building sets from Timberworks Toys. One of my favorite places to shop for kids' gifts in town is Calhoun's. They have done a wonderful job of refining their selection to the best of each thing. For example, every single kids book they carry is among my twins' favorites (check out Little Pea). As far as I know, they are the only place in town to get Corolle dolls, the gold standard of baby dolls (and believe me quality matters when those things are being dragged through the mud, smeared with sunscreen, and thrown down the stairs.) With their eye for products, it's no surprise that they are carrying the hot gift for tween girls this year, MOGO bracelets, magnetic charm bracelets.

If your list includes babies, preschoolers, and older kids head to The Butterfly Tattoo where you can find something for all of them.My favorites include The Little Experience kits which get kids sewing and building. They get the experience and the gift and you don't even have to spring for batteries. Prices range from $15-$20. For teenagers, check out the jewelry selection, rock posters, and line of Knock Knock products.

When kids are too little to even know they are getting a gift, it's hard to know what to buy them. Commemorate their first holiday season with an heirloom gift from McAdamsLTD. One of my favorite gifts my girls received was a beautiful pewter animal candle set. Each one is for a different birthday. McAdams carries a similar set from Empire Silver for $54. Or start an ornament collection for them with one of the beautiful blown glass ones McAdams has in stock this year.

Of course a holiday shopping guide for kids in Columbia has to include Ann's Teacher Store. Now through the 24th, you receive 15% off your purchases. They have a huge selection of games and puzzles you won't find anywhere else in town. Some of the gifts I would give from their store include the trucks and tea sets made from recycled plastics by Green Toys, the Find It tubes $20.95 (give these to a child who is traveling and become the parents' new favorite relative; and the animal chopsticks which are not only great to eat with but also build fine motor skills. A pair has found their way into each of the girls' stockings and into my holiday giveaway too!

Restaurant Review : Donut D-Light

One of the things I missed the most when we moved here was a neighborhood coffee shop. We were renting in a new neighborhood off of the Lake of the Wood exit and there was nowhere to go except for Sonic. How I longed for the plentiful coffee shops of the Twin Cities, especially the kid friendly ones where I could inhale caffeine and sugar while the girls played.

Well there still isn't a coffee shop out there but now that we have moved away of course something similar had opened. Donut D-Light, which opened a few months back in the old SweetTooth Bakery spot, makes up for what it lacks in atmosphere with a homey welcoming environment. There's free coffee for people who dine in and a kids space with books and small tables. And of course, donuts.

I spoke briefly about their donuts a few weeks back but let me go on about them a little more. People, they fill your donuts to order. There's about then different fillings to chose from and four different donuts to put them in. I was in heaven with my chocolate covered, raspberry filled donut.

In addition to the donuts, they have started to offer cookies, homemade dinner rolls, and breads. The orange glazed cinnamon raisin half loaf I took home to the family was devoured in one evening. They also do pies, cakes, cupcakes, and cookies. You can even have them made sugar free. Don't like their offerings or want something different? Bring in a recipe and they will make it. Plans are in the works to offer a daily dinner option for take out too.

It may not be the coffee shop of my dreams... it's something better. If only it was down the street from my current house! If you want to check it out for yourself head down there this Saturday when they will be selling eight different kinds of Christmas cookies.

Local Landmarks : The Magic Tree

Since I started the blog, I have especially enjoyed doing this series of posts sponsored by Landmark Bank. Heading off to local landmarks has given me a chance to get to know my new city. But with my last few posts I wanted to feature the landmarks that made Columbia, Missouri really feel like home.

Since we moved in the Fall, it was the holidays before we got really settled. Unpacking and putting up the decorations really made us feel like we were here to stay. We spent much of the months of November and December driving around on the weekends exploring.

One day in December, we were out at dusk looking for homes for sale when we noticed several cars in a row turning off a main road. Being nosy, we followed them and ended up stumbling upon the Magic Tree. For those who haven't heard of the Magic Tree it's simply a gigantic tree strung with hundreds of multi-colored lights. But that simple tree is truly magical. Standing in its shadow makes you happy.

We wanted to share that feeling with my in-laws so we drove them out to see it only to find a Charlie Brown Christmas tree version. Disappointment filled the car until we noticed a small sign explaining the move to the Village of Cherry Hill. We drove over and found the official Magic Tree still awe inspiring in its new home. Asian Invasion : Review of Saigon Bistro and The Flavor Factory

Recently two new Asian restaurants opened in Columbia. They are taking two very different approaches to cuisine and face a few of the same drawbacks. Here's my take on both places.

Saigon Bistro, which opened last month on Broadway in the old Cafe Nove space, serves a traditional Vietnamese menu. Unfortunately I have been only able to eat there once due to their early closing hours and inconsistencies on opening time. I assume they are envisioning this more of a lunch and take out place but limiting your audience seems like a bad move, especially in a college town where the students (like vampires) appear in the District at dark.

In the few weeks they have been open, I have already been turned away twice. The first time we arrived at seven to be told the kitchen had closed (it does stay open until eight on Friday and Saturday night.) My second attempt was foiled when we arrived for an eleven o'clock lunch only to be told they were running late and would not open until eleven thirty. After these attempts and hearing tales of long waits from others, we put a plan of takeout into action. It's not my favorite way to try a place but seemed the best way to actually taste the food.

All of the time sheninigans wouldn't matter if the food was good. So does the food make up for it? Hmm, that's a tough one. I was definitely pleased with the dishes we had. The pork with rice was well seasoned and well cooked and the beef with noodles could have been from some of my favorite Vietmese joints in bigger cities. And the spring rolls were perfectly put together, spotted with lightly fried tofu and accompanied by the traditional sauce. All in all though, it's a case of Como-good. It's far better than most of the ethnic food in town but it lacks a certain something.

And that something is spice. I am used to the spice level searing through the subtle flavors of Vietnamese food and without it Saigon Bistro's food tastes a bit bland. There's definitely a yearning for Vietnamese food in this city and the price can't be beat (our two entrees and the spring rolls totaled $18). I just hope that's enough to get them through the opening kinks, reports of long waits, and that cursed space. At least long enough for me to go back for some pho and fried spring rolls.

The Flavor Factory opened back in October and I have been chewing over what to say about it since then. Like Saigon Bistro, it suffers from a weird space and slightly off opening times. It is a new venture from the previous co-owner of Bamboo Sushi and is in the same location (the annex across from the second Shakes location). After the dissolution of Bamboo, the owner Andrew Nam came up with a new fusion concept based on healthier Asian food that he thought customers of Chipotle would like.

He's right on the mark with the idea. Chipotle itself is actually developing a fast casual Asian chain concept. But is he on the mark with the food? My first stab at lunch involved me wandering into the restaurant at 10:30 calling out hello, hello for several minutes then leaving when no one appeared. I tried again the next week and was sucessful at being seated and offered a menu.

The menu focuses on salads, fritters, fried rice, and rice bowls. There is also a small selection of appetizers and soups. It's rife with fusion: cheese and apples mixed with sriracha and rice. I actually ordered that combination as a fritter and hoped for the best while I drank the miso that came with it. What was delivered to my table was more a frittata.pizza combo of eggs, cheese, some rice, diced apples. It was cut into slices and drizzled with sriracha. It was greasy and frankly, awful.

Still I wanted to try again. So I came in one night for takeout and this time chose the least fusion infused dishes I could find on the menu: chicken fried rice and bulgogi. While waiting for the food I chatted with one of the managers about the plans for the restaurant including theme nights, a cocktail menu, and a smoothie menu. I also drank their imported beer special of $1.50 Hitachino Nest. Which if you know that beer is like finding Kobe beef for the price of a hamburger.

Once I lingered over two of those, I took my food home to the family and was pleased to find fried rice with the perfect crunchy but not overly greasy or salty taste I can never achieve at home. And the bulgogi, well the meat was so tender that I almost believed it was Kobe. Forget the fusion, this guy needs to open a Korean restaurant.

Since then I have not been able to go back. And though the sign is up I can't find any mention of them online. Has anyone else been or was my amazing bulgogi and cheap Hitachino Nest night all a wonderful dream?

Holiday Haps in Columbia Mo

Here it is, your guide to all the holiday events around Como. Bookmark and check back as I will add more as I find them! Not in the holiday mood? The Capturing Como Calendar always has ideas for things to do in Columbia, MO.

December 1st: Hanukkuh starts today! Unfortunately I couldn't find any local events celebrating it. But if you would like to have me over for your family's celebration, I love potato pancakes!

December 2nd: The Village of Cherry Hill holds it's holiday festival from 5-8pm. At 5:30 there will be a lighting ceremony of the Magic Tree (yep it moved). There will be trolley rides, kids' crafts, Santa photos, and more. Bring food to donate to the Food Bank and receive $5 off a Kostaki's pizza to take home for dinner. Details on the festival here.

December 3rd: Head over to Shelter Insurance for their 45th annual Christmas tree lighting ceremony at 6pm. The free, public event begins with seasonal music by the West Junior High School Delphian Choir and Viking Band. After the tree is lighted, Santa Claus and his helpers will appear with small gifts for the youngsters. Then head down to the District for Living Windows. Shopkeepers stage live holiday performances for onlookers. There are strolling carolers, holiday treats,and visits with Santa. It runs from 6pm to 8pm.

December 4th: Get up early and cheer costumed participants of the Jingle Bell Run on. Race starts at 8am from the Roger B Wilson government building at 801 W. Walnut. If you want to run yourself, register before 5pm on December 1st. Attend the city's Kwanzaa celebration from 2-5pm at Douglass High School. There will be entertainment and a holiday feast. Please call Parks and Recreation at 874-7460 for more information. If you're in the mood for a movie, don't miss Disney's A Christmas Carol being shown for free at 6pm at the Amory. If you've got little ones this is their chance to talk to Santa. Children between the ages of 3-10 can call the North Pole from 9 am to 3 pm. Children will have the opportunity to speak with Santa or Mrs. Claus or one of the many elves and personally give them their Christmas lists. Call 874-7473 or 874-6335 only on this date.

December 5th: Enjoy the second day of the the 27th annual Holiday Home Tour, presented by the Women’s Symphony League of the Missouri Symphony Society. The tour features some of Columbia’s most interesting homes, all decorated for the holidays. Proceeds from the tour help support the programs and projects of the Missouri Symphony Society and the Women’s Symphony League. Ticket Prices: $12 in advance • $15 at the door. Read more here. Later that afternoon, join the The Columbia Community Band, a 70 member symphonic concert band, for their performance of popular and classical selections as well as holiday music. This free performance takes place at Hickman High School's auditorium at 4pm.

December 7th: Creative Days Arts Studio holds its first in a series of "Create a Gift Workshops" from 4pm to 7pm. $10 for one hour, $18 for two hours, or $25 for all three hours includes all the materials and guidance needed for you and your kids to create gifts. It even includes the gift wrap. Check their Facebook event page for more details and other dates for this workshop.

December 11th: North Village transforms itself into a Holiday Wonderland. There will be carolers, a Swedish Christmas celebration, seasonal drink vendors for you mulled cider addicts, and a winter market in the catacombs for anyone who hasn't finished their shopping. That sounds fun for even the scroogiest. Check out their Facebook page for more details. Also on December 11th is the 1Canoe2 Barnwarming at Shryocks Big Red Barn. This event, happening from 1pm-5pm, features local artisans selling their wares (including Capturing Como favorite Hoot Design Co.) as well as letterpress demonstrations and s'more making. They had me at s'mores.

December 11th: Take the kiddos to the Inside Columbia office for "Cookies with Santa" from 10-12. Free photos, cookies, and a Snapshots photobooth! They will have to drag me out of that thing. I love photobooths.

December 12th: Why should kids have all the fun? Take your pets to Lizzi and Rocco's for pet photos with Santa. $10 gets you a 5x7 and a sheet of wallets (perfect for Christmas cards). You can get additional sheets for $5. All proceeds benefit the Central Missouri Humane Society. This event is also taking place the 5th.

December 13th: It's a classic for a reason. For more than 30 years, The Nebraska Theatre Caravan has been performing "A Christmas Carol" for audiences across the country. Check out the performance at the Jesse Auditorium. Tickets range from $20 to $32. Children $14/MU students half-price.Go here for more information.

December 15th: Why wait for the TBS marathon when you can head to the Columbia library and see A Christmas Story. The show starts at 6:30pm and at the end a copy of the DVD will be raffled off. Learn more about the film and watch the trailer here.

December 18th: At 6pm you can catch Jingle All the Way at 6pm at the Amory. Admission is free.

And outside of Columbia, here's what happening in Mid-Missouri:

December 3rd: Head over to Jefferson city to view the Governor’s Mansion's decorations for the holiday season. Tours are free and open to the public. Tours will be given from 6:30 – 9 p.m. Friday, December 3, and from 2 - 4 p.m. Saturday, December 4. For more information 573.751.0356.call

December 4th: Head to Hermann for a Kristkindl Market at Stone Hill Winery. This is a traditional German Christmas market with crafts, Christmas goodies, entertainment, hot soups, and cider sponsored by the Hermann Area Chamber of Commerce. Click here for more details and check out Hermann's city website for many other holiday activities. Or head the opposite direction to Rocheport and meet at the large tree behind the Christian Church Annex on 2nd at 6pm. The switch will be flipped, the lights will go on, and carols will be sung. Or go to Jefferson city for Old Munichberg Christkindelfest on Ashley Street. Enjoy homemade strudel, crafts and more. The Central United Church of Christ will offer a German-style worship service at 11 a.m. At 4 p.m. that same afternoon, Jefferson City presents its Christmas parade.

As a word nerd, I love making up odd words and catchphrases. Since my husband is sick of hearing them I thought I would share them with you. So here you are, the second in a series of my Comoisms.

Como-Good: Como-good is the word used to describe something you wouldn't normally love as much as you do but it's the best you've got it takes on a luster it may or may not deserve. When a new restaurant, business, play, etc comes to town you judge it on a scale of how good it is based on its competition in Columbia not based on a scale of anything like it you have experienced before.

Wow! Black Friday is insane in Columbia! I would have been better off staying home as I didn't get out until seven and most of the deals were gone. Weekend Guide : Holiday Kickoff

It's official, it's the holidays. Between seeing the new Harry Potter movie and raking up the massive amounts of leaves in our yard, we would love to do some of these things this weekend.

Saturday morning we're hitting the Farmer's Market for the last day at the Arc until Spring. In addition to the usual stalls there will be local artisans on locations selling their goods. You can holiday shop while getting the ingredients for Thanksgiving. If you see a stressed mom binging on Patric chocolate while holding onto tow kids with one hand, come up and say hi.

If you're in the mood for a little road trip this weekend, head out to the Hermann Wine Trail's Holiday Fare Wine Trail. Sip and sample festive fare at this annual celebration of good food and good wine. $30 per person—Advance Purchase Required. Ticket price includes a souvenir wine glass. A limited number of tickets are available. Purchase tickets online, or call the Hermann Welcome Center, 800-932-8687. This event is happening from 10-5 on Saturday and 11-5 on Sunday.

Saturday night you can get your Thanksgiving desserts and help families in need by attending the Giving Thanks Dessert Auction at Orr Street Studios, 106 Orr St. Dozens of desserts will be auctioned off from 6 to 9 p.m. with the proceeds benefiting the Access to Healthy Foods Double Food Stamp Program. Since it was one of the first Como things we did as a family, we'll definitely be attending the Columbia Holiday Parade put on by the Jaycees at 3pm this Sunday. This is year number 31 for the parade and the theme is “Celebrating Traditions.” Tip: we skipped the outgoing traffic last year and walked over to a deserted Broadway Brewery to wait out the crowds. I've heard from Columbia Beer Enthusiasts that the brewery's Winter Warmer is top notch..

Want something a little less traditional? Also on Sunday, at 4 pm, the will be sponsoring a night of music, food, dancing and poetry. There will be presentations and cultural foods from various Columbia religious communities. This event takes place at the Memorial Union on campus and is free to attend.

Time for another edition of Como quick takes. A few things that are happening in Columbia, MO that don't warrant a full post...

This space was supposed to have an early review of Saigon Bistro but when we sauntered in for dinner at 7:40 last night we were denied. Turns out they close at seven. Seven? Really? Let's hope that was just a opening day thing. The menu did look promising so we'll try again this weekend.

After being turned away we were still hankering for some Asian food. So we walked across the street and tried Formosa Gardens for the first time. Perhaps it was just college memories coming back but I liked it. Not sure why people dog it, it's good basic American Chinese food. Greasy, spicy, and bad for me. That's needed sometimes.

A blogger friend from KC alerted me that tickets for the Scissor Sisters show at the Blue Note go on sale on Friday. And don't forget that The Hold Steady is playing Thursday night.

Como Whine and Dine is discussing Thanksgiving restaurant plans. Who will be open, why won't, and who is charging an arm and a leg. Okay, that last part was my own addition. Well worth the money in my opinion would be a trek to Boonville to eat at Glenn's Cafe's Thanksgiving buffet. It's $20 and reservations are required.

Monday Giveaway : Hoot Designs Print

A few weeks ago I was scouting ideas for, the soon to come on the blog, Como Gift Guides when I spotted some cool bags printed with maps of Columbia. What an awesome idea, I thought. Even more awesome is that they are the brainchild of Hoot Design, a one woman design firm based in Columbia out of Orr Street Studios. In addition to the bags, Kristin Brown also makes locally themed cards and prints.

Kristin, a former art director, really got Hoot going after she made a custom alphabet print for her nephew. Since then her prints have been featured on hot design blogs like Young House Love. Each print contains unique images and sayings that relate to the baby's life. She also does custom work for weddings and parties as well as making limited run prints.

This Sunday at the King's Daughters Holiday Festival, I was able to meet Kristin in person and check out her work. In addition to a few prints for myself, I snagged one to give away on the blog. Check out what could be gracing your wall:

Weekend Guide : A Day Late, A Dollar Short

We're back at home and this is what we're up to this weekend. What are you doing?

To celebrate Billiard's being on twitter, we're headed there tonight for some burgers and fries. Okay, I admit I am just craving it after discussing the best fries in Como this morning. Billard's is my favorite, what's yours?

Saturday I am hoping to shop up a storm at the Columbia Weavers & Spinner’s Guild's 21st Annual Holiday Exhibition & Sale. The event is the culmination of the year’s creative efforts of the guild. Offerings include hand-woven and hand-dyed scarves, luxurious shawls, one-of-a-kind jackets, vests and sweaters, unique table linens, baby blankets, stuffed animals, and distinctive baskets. There will also be handspun yarns, Christmas ornaments, fiber-art wall pieces and rugs, a variety of hand-felted hats, and beadwork for sale. There are also daily demonstrations of weaving, spinning and fiber art where I will fool myself into thinking I could make the stuff myself. There are door prizes too and a portion of the proceeds from the sale support the guild's scholarship fund. The sale takes place at Boone County Historical Society Museum, 3801 Ponderosa St.

I will also be heading to the King's Daughters Holiday Festival. I missed last year's so I definitely want to make it this year so I can accomplish my goal of buying all my Christmas presents from local vendors.

On the errand front, we plan to hit the second to last Saturday for the Farmers Market season at the Arc. They move to their new winter location at Rock Bridge Christan Church starting December 4th. We're also headed to Lizzi and Rocco's for $5 nail trims and $25 microchipping to benefit Project Precious Paws.

Sunday morning, we're taking the girls to see the free showing of Despicable Me at the Forum theater. This movie got great reviews but it's always a toss up on whether or not the girls will make it through a film so seeing it for free is perfect. Showing starts at ten if you want to join me. Sunday night I hope to be seeing another movie. One that's a lot less fun. Ragtag is hosting a special screening of Inside Job which has been getting all kinds of raves. The showing starts at seven and will be followed by a Q&A with produce Audrey Marrs, director Charles Ferguson (via iChat on the big screen), and MU economist Peter Muesser. It's hard to believe that Thanksgiving is only two weeks away. My husband and I met the day after Thanksgiving and since then it's been one of my favorite holidays. We've done several takes on the day ranging from lobster in Mexico to an all out food orgy followed by a board game marathon with friends. But my favorite way to spend the day is cooking for my family. This year our inlaws are coming and I am planning the following feast:

Champagne Basted Turkey
Green Beans with Pesto
Chestnut Stuffing (since they're in season!)
Sweet and Savory Cranberry Sauce

I still need a sweet potato dish. Any ideas?

My turkeys always turn out great. My secret? Stuff with grapefruit and spread herb cheese under the skin. And use a free range turkey. You can get them in town from Clover's and the Root Cellar. Just call to reserve one. Or go direct to the source at Goose Creek Farms. They have a few left but call soon.

If you prefer to let someone else do they work, you can buy premade meals from local puryeor Hoss's Market and Rotisserie. Call soon though as orders are due one week from today (the 18th). If you're looking for something a little more gourmet, Wine Cellar and Bistro also offers "Thanksgiving To Go".

Como Quick Takes

Well, after eleven straight hours of travel we're home from Portland, OR. I must apologize for my lack of posts while I was gone. The hotel was lovely but the wifi was awful and there was the matter of all that beer to drink. I will be back on the horse tomorrow but I did want to update some quick takes.

My friend Christa, designer of much of the look of Capturing Como, just opened her Etsy shop. If you've been reading her blog C Jane Create, I know you are as excited as I am to be able to get your hands on some of her wares. My favorite item is the water droplets coasters. Don't you think they would make a great gift for a coworker or as a gift exchange present? Everyone needs somewhere to put their drinks!

Tickets for the Christmas Homes tour in Boonville on December 4th just went on sale. I am a snooper so I think $15 is a fair price to pay to get a peek at some of these places. Plus it's a nice laid back way to spend time with friends or your mom before the Christmas insanity gets going. Tickets are available at the Boonville Chamber of Commerce. Artlandish announced dates for their holiday Catacombs Art Market, December 11th and 12th. I am quite happy about this because I have been wanting to try some of the artisan jam from Cthulu Kitchens. This CoMo operation of deliciousness is going to be selling all kinds of goods. Look for a full post on them next week.

Holiday Cards, Ahoy!

In spite of being a staunch untraditionalst on a lot of things (we serve frito pies at our holiday parties and tortilla soup on Christmas Eve), I have an addiction to Christmas cards. Unfortunately, my children have an addiction to destroying my mind and have yet to smile together in any picture that would be appropriate for a card. The first year we sent out a card featuring a picture that looking like they were bot happy, but actually one of them was crying. Shh, don't tell.

Yet every year much to my husband's dismay, I remain determined to capturing the perfect moment and slap it on a card and send it to a hundred of our nearest and dearest. If only we were in town this weekend, I could outsource the photo taking to the professionals. Jennifer Roberts of Moonshadow Studio is hosting portrait sessions Sunday at Nifong park. $150 buys you a 30 minute session for up to five people and one pet (adding a pet in?! There are some brave souls out there.), 25 photo cards, and one 8x10 print and two 5x7 prints. If you are allergy prone or leaf phobic, you can also book an inside session.

Disclosure: Jennifer was kind enough to offer me some prints in exchange for posting this information. Once my therapy sessions resulting from our last photo attempts conclude, I may take her up on it.

Weekend Guide : Get Your Craft On

First I must apologize for my lack of posts this week. We're vacationing in Portland, OR, and the hotel's wifi is very spotty. And there is all this incredible craft beer that needs drinking. If I were in Como this weekend, this is what I would be doing.

Tonight, the District is holding their holiday Shop Hop. You can stoll from store to store enjoying drinks, treats, and special discounts from your favorite stores. Just think, you could finish all your holiday shopping tonight without ever having to set foot in the mall.

If you don't get all of your gift shopping done in the District, head over to Cedar Ridge Elementary Saturday for their craft show and bazaar, an annual fundraiser for the school. There will be unique gifts, crafts, and baked good for sale. Black Market BBQ will be debuting their pulled pork recipe.

Saturday afternoon, Les Bourgeois is celebrating their 25th anniversary with a free party. Head up to Rocheport at 2pm to enjoy music from the Big Smith Band and guided tours including a sneak peek of their new production facility.

Don't forget to Fall back, daylight savings time starts on Sunday. Your kids wake up way too early and I get an extra hour of vacation. Yeeha!

Since you're up early anyway, beat the sleepyheads to your favorite breakfast spot, and head out for even more craftiness at the 27th Annual Fall Arts and Crafts Show at the Hearnes Center Fieldhouse from 11am to 4pm. If you're not feeling homey enough, you can cap off your afternoon with the Booneslick Trail Quilter's Guild show at the Stoney Creek Inn. There is a quilt display, silent auction, quilt market, and more. $5 admission.

Sunday night the Blue Note is hosting The Maplewood Barn Community Theatre's first annual The Princess Bride’ Quote-a-long at 7pm. It's a fundraiser to help the company replace the red barn destroyed earlier this year by fire. A minimum donation is $15 is requested and costumes are encouraged.

Guest Post : My Favorite Places in Como, Then and Now

I left Columbia two days after I graduated from Mizzou, but I had a feeling that I’d be back. I was right. I was caught in the vortex that seems to surround this city and drop former college students back into town in the guise of everyday working people.

This is likely my last year of living in Columbia, so I’m trying to take stock of my favorite, and not so
favorite, things about this college town. This blog’s regular author was kind enough to let me invade her space for a post about my favorite places in Columbia, so read on for my favorites then (1996 to 2000) and now.

So, here’s my favorite Columbia:

Place to buy books
Then: Acorn Books, on south 9th, near the Missouri Theater. During the college semester, my
recreational reading was non-existent, so after my last exam every term, I gave myself $20 to buy as
many used books as I could in Acorn. When they left their storefront I know they were supposed to
keep a location in an antique mall somewhere, but I haven’t seen them anywhere. Can anyone confirm if they’re still going strong?
Now: Get Lost Bookshop, 8 S. Ninth St. This is the kind of book store that writers fantasize will sell their books. They’re selective about what they stock, but not snooty, making for a great variety packed into a small retail space. They mix new with used books, and offer a good selection of literary magazines and a wonderful children’s selection.

Place to get free entertainment
Then: Twilight Festival, downtown. To me, Twilight Festival was one of the best things about Columbia and is now one of its biggest losses. On Thursday nights in June and September, downtown would be filled with musicians, dance groups, bounce houses, etc., all there to just entertain and engage. Unofficial rumors clashed with official word on its demise, but either way, I wish someone could have found a way to keep it going.
Now: Artrageous Fridays, downtown. Columbia’s art scene has definitely improved, and this event
several times a year is a great way to see what our community’s most creative people are doing with
their talent.

Place to go dancing
Then: Shattered, in the space that was most recently Underground Cafe. Let us take a moment of
silence to remember that which was the original Shattered. To me, their Broadway location was never
the real deal. The real Shattered was a hole in the wall that catered more to the underground, punk
and goth scene, than the frat crowd found elsewhere. It also reeked of a distinctive combination of
stale beer, BO, smoke from both tobacco and clove cigarettes and something else unidentifiable. It was awesome. Sniff...
Now: I haven’t found a good substitute for Shattered. SoCo Club, off Nifong, has some good dance
nights. I’m also excited to check out the Saturday night Footwork Dance Party at Sideshow, under
Gumby’s Pizza, but I haven’t been there yet.

Place for drinks
Then: The Old Heidelberg, 410 S. Ninth St. No, really, the old one. Before it burned down. The beer was cheap, the food was cheaper and the jukebox was always playing Free Bird. It’s also close enough that journalism school kids could somersault there after class, and then, hours later, stumble to the nearby J-school slums to crash on someone’s couch. Or so I’m told.
Now: Ragtag Cinema/Uprise, 10 Hitt St. Their bar has a wonderful beer selection that rotates regularly,good wines and a nice selection of hooch. Even if you’re not there to see a movie or eat baked goods,this is a great place to hang out, especially if it’s warm and the porch is open. There’s a mellow atmosphere and a diverse crowd.

Place to get coffee
Then: Osama’s, on S. Ninth Street. This was the sister to Coffee Zone, and was the first place my dorm friends and I visited after our first class on the first day of college. It became a regular hang out between classes or in the evenings. I, personally, introduced several classmates to something called hummus there.
Now: Coffee Zone, 11 N. Ninth St. Why mess with the best? Their coffee is still the best in town and
they have a great food menu.

Place to go on a gorgeous Saturday afternoon
Then: Les Bourgeois in Rocheport. Pick up a bottle of wine at the A-frame and chill on the deck.
Now: Grindstone Nature Area, off Rock Quarry Road, just south of Stadium. Oh how one’s priorities
change. When one owns a 50-pound lab-mix, one does not ask “What would be fun for me?” One
asks “How can I exhaust this creature with seemingly endless energy reserves?” Grindstone does the
trick, and provides a great escape to nature without leaving town. Once you get off the main gravel trail, you can let your dog run off-leash through an area that includes grass paths and wooded trails. There are also creeks for your dogs to splash in and hills to climb.

Obviously, I could go on about even more of my Columbia favorites, but these are some of

Monday Giveaway : His Gem Creations

A couple of weeks ago I attended a blogging and social media conference in St. Louis. While there I was able to connect with a few local businesses. I especially enjoyed chatting with Julie Kaempfe of His Gem since she is a Stephens College graduate.

Today in Como :Be a Superhero for Columbia Schools

Organizers will seek to break the current world record of 1500 at an event on Saturday, October 30, at the Hickman High School football field. Community members are requested to show up in superhero costumes to break the record. Registration for the record-breaking activity will begin at 11:00 a.m. and the actual count will take place at soon after 12:00 noon, when all costumed attendees must be present.

Weekend Guide : All Hallow's Eve

If you're looking for a straight up Halloween-themed weekend check out my post on all the spooky events around town and if you're kidded up, head over to Como Kids for their guide to trick or treat and kid Halloween activities. But if you're looking for something different, check out what else is going on in Columbia this weekend.

Tonight, Thursday night, you've got a couple of choices. You could join Inside Columbia magazine at Machens Toyota from 6 to 8:30 p.m for their College of BBQ Knowledge and beer festival. There will be BBQ prepared by Chef Brook Harlan and the Kansas City Royal Sauce Champions team at Spicewine Ironworks and a dozen beers to sample. There will also be door prizes and smoking and grilling tips and tricks. Tickets are $30 at the door.

Or you could head over to Cafe Berlin for their storytelling night. The bar opens at 7:30pm and stories begin at 8pm. For more information check out their Facebook page. Rumor has it that tonight's stories will have a scary theme.

On Friday the students from the Culinary Arts are having a fundraiser lunch. Check out Show Me Eats for all the details.

Saturday you can be part of the Guinness Book of World Records by being a superhero for Columbia schools. People from across Como are assembling at Hickman field dressed in superhero costumes in a bid for the world record for most people dressed up as a superhero. Check in is at 11:00am, the count is at 12:15pm. There will be music, food, costume contests, and fun activities. Check out SuperComo for all the details.

If you're in a more scholarly mood, head to the Monsanto Auditorium of the Life Sciences Center on the MU campus for a talk from John Cannon on the Science of Brewing. Talk starts at 10:30am.

Saturday night is the 8th Annual Hickman Hog Roast. It takes place in Hickman Commons from 4:30 – 7:30pm. This event is sponsored by the Hickman PTSA and Music Boosters and all proceeds go directly to benefit Hickman students. More info including menu and ticket order form is available here.

Restaurant Review : Houlihan's

Last night I joked on Twitter that I was headed to the darkside. Besides dalliances with Taco Bueno (I will out myself as a Buenohead) and the occasional Chipotle run, we pretty much eat exclusively at local restaurants. And then AddSheet entered the picture with their amazing deals. I will also out myself as a major cheapie. So when they offered $9 for $30 of food at Houlihan's, I couldn't resist.

So for dinner last night we roped in two friends and went to gobble up some chain goodness. The evening looked promising when we were greeted by a blackboard proclaiming their Monday special: half price 20oz beers. That blackboard was less promising when we asked the waiter to list the beer selection: Budweiser, BudLight, Michelob, Blue Moon, and Sam Adams. We all ended up with the Sam Adams Octoberfest (side note: really quite good). They do have very reasonable priced mixed drink selections, including martinis flights, and wine flights.

Our next challenge was what always slays me at chains, the gigantic menu. Although the Houlihan's one isn't the colassal book that some places like the Cheesecake Factory have, it was still laden with choices. The theme seemed to be straight up American fare (prime rib, grilled chicken and shrimp) with a section of burgers and sandwiches. They run a meal deal in the evening where any entree comes with a salad or soup and a dessert (from their Mealio Dealio list of choices). But I just couldn't handle the choices and went with the Tillamook Creekstone Black Angus burger. When I asked is they made their own fries I was told they came from a bag (in spite of their emphasis on scratch cooking on their website) so I got their Ginger Peanut slaw on the side. The husband got the grilled shrimp with the cesear salad and the pecan pie since he was mealio dealing it up. Our friends just stuck with beer.

The food came quickly and with it our second round of beer. The waiter suddenly remembered they had Schafly on draft as well this time. I have to admit, my burger was damn good. The lettuce and tomato tasted fresh and like it had been cut for my burger. The cheese was great, if not quite as good as I had hoped. And the bun was fantastic. I know it probably wasn't cooked there but it tasted like it was. And the slaw was great too. The husband's food was good as well. Nothing exciting but fine.

So the food was good, the beer selection just okay, so what's left. The service. Oh yeah. It wasn't great. We never got water, weren't checked on much, and the waiter was vacuuming around our table at eight forty five. It's all bluster, no follow up. Great outdoor patio with a fire pit that wasn't open. Made from scratch cooking with fries in a bag. It's just not enough, in my opinion, to justify the prices. It would be better if they scaled back and did just a few things well.

Worst of all? There was no flair to be seen.

Halloween Happenings in Columbia : For Dogs, Kids, and Zombies

In spite of my recent complaining on Twitter about the Christmazation of Halloween, I am glad that there are events through the week to celebrate. More fun for my kids and more candy for me. If you're a candy hound like me, here are my picks for Como Halloween events.

Tuesday you can start your trick or treating early at Stephens College. The college hosts this free event at Kimball Ballroom of Lela Raney Wood Hall, located at 6 N. College Ave, from 7pm-9pm. In addition to the candy, there will be games and crafts.

You can also take the kids to the Trick or Treat Through Missouri History at the State Historical Society, on Hitt St. at Lowry Mall on campus. There will be a “Kid’s Cave” and “Ghostly Gallery,” and chances to learn about Missouri bats, pumpkins, bones and more.

Thursday afternoon from 12pm to 4pm head to the Craft Studio to upcycle household items into spook decorations. Just remember if you spookify your yard, load up on the candy. Decorations are magnets for trick or treaters.

Friday night, you can join my family as we head down to the District for Halloweenie event for teenies. that cracks me up every time. Participating businesses start handing out candy at 4 pm and the festivities are usually over by 6 pm. For more information call (573) 874-7460. Recommended plan on action from The District: "We recommend starting at the 800 & 900 block of Broadway and then going south & north on Ninth. After that follow the crowds!"

Or you can have some good clean fun with zombies at the PACE Thriller Night. The $20 entry fee gets you drinks and snacks, theater makeup and instruction (face only, plan to do your hair), and dance instruction including the choreography to "Thriller." There will be a mass dance to Thriller that will be taped (you can get your own copy for $12). Be sure to dress in your best zombie gear.

If you're the type to put a costume on your dog, and I admit I am tempted, head to Treats UnleashedSaturday for Fall photos to benefit Project Precious Paws, a costume contest, doggy trick 'r treating, and Halloween-themed dog games.If you plan to take your dog trick or treating Sunday night, be sure to participate in the Nail trims and microchipping courtesy of Project Precious Paws.

On Halloween itself, Creative Days Arts Studio is holding an event from 4pm to 8pm that includes a haunted house, spooky stories, ghoulish treats, and creepy crafts! Admission is $5 per child.

You could also take your little ones to the Hearnes Center for Tiger Night of Fun, Columbia's official safe alternative to door-to-door trick or treating, 5pm-7pm. There are activities, games, and treats specifically designed for children sixth grade and under. For more information, call 874-7460.

If you didn't get enough of The Rocky Horror Picture Show on Glee, you can see it on the big screen at The Blue Note. Doors open at 9pm, film starts at 9:30pm. This sounds like quite the production!

Other spooky options include FearFest Haunted House, Necropolis Haunted House, and Shyrocks Corn Maze. Interglatic Fun Zone is also having a Halloween themed week with scary movies on the big screen, haunted laser tag, and a ghastly lounge on Friday and Saturday. They are also holding 18+ costume parties Saturday and Sunday. Thought for a creative costume: Chilean miner.

If you haven't gotten your costume yet check out some local alternatives to the big box stores or the pop up Halloween stores with their outrageously overpriced costumes. Creative Days Art Studio is staying open late this week for costume making: "Bring your costume basics (pj’s, thermals, sweat suit) and we’ll help transform your everyday, mild-mannered attire into a Super Suit" The price is $7 an hour and $5 of that is being donated to the Columbia Public School Foundation. The studio will also host free face painting Saturday morning from 9am to 11am before the Be a Superhero for Columbia Schools event. For adults, Maude Vintage, Absolute Vintage, and Gotcha in the District all rent costumes for a reasonable fee.

Monday Giveaway : Norton Reidel Glasses

Before I moved to Missouri, I had never recent heard of Norton grapes but in the last few weeks it's like they're following me around. First I had an excellent bottle of Norton wine from Les Bourgeois at their Haunt Cuisine dinner. Then Scott Rowson had a column on the Norton grape in the Tribune last week. So it seemed like a natural fit that Missouri Wines offered a set of Norton Riedel glasses for this week's giveaway.

Riedel made these glasses specifically to complement the Norton Grape. The story behind the glass:
"Winemakers, sommeliers, retailers, restaurateurs and MWGB members all came together this past April in Kansas City to participate in a workshop led by Georg Riedel. The goal: find the glass shape that would best enhance Missouri’s Norton wines and their regional characteristics. To do this, the panel participated in a group sensory evaluation exercise where they blind tasted a number of Norton wines in 16 different glass shapes in four rounds. Each round included eliminations until the very last round when the shape that best fit Norton wines was chosen."

Show Me the Blog Shows Me St. Louis

This weekend, local blogger Jessica Kohler and I headed east to St. Louis for the inaugural Show Me the Blog Conference. In addition to hearing all sorts of things I should be doing with blogging, I met a ton of interesting people from St. Louis and the surrounding areas. Here are some of my picks for people and places to check out:

Miss Pris Tasty Treats: Right as my energy was flagging, plates of tasty treats came in from Miss Pris. I could barely eat my chocolate covered oreo without stopping to say how fantastic it was. We also got to taste their chocolate covered pretzels and their Heavenly Hash. They don't have a physical location but you can order online.

Confession, sometimes I call Como a small town even though I know it's not. But Melissa actually does live in a small town in Missouri. At A Small Town's Girl's Guide she blogs about her life in Missouri after relocating from NYC. I loved reading about the places she goes and hope to have her to Como soon so I can show off Columbia.

Another Missouri entrepreneur I met was Julie Kaempfe, the creator of His Gem. Her company sells baby clothes and gifts with an inspirational message. Finally, something to take to baptisms besides miniature bibles and crosses. I will be doing a giveaway of some items soon.

One of the first bloggers that spoke was Roshini Cope of the blog Glamazini. Loved, loved, loved her personality. She totally made me think of YouTube in a new way. Check out her channel to see her in person. And I would be remiss if I didn't mention Linda of Just Linda. I have not had a chance to check her blog out yet but her speech and tweets had me laughing.

Final Missouri product that caught me eye was Rizzo Tees. I had seen tweets about them but this was the first time I had been to the site to check them out. Dying. Laughing. I want to get this to give to all my smug smart phone friends whose FourSquare check ins make me jealous of their droids, iPhones, etc all day on Twitter. Weekend Guide : Homecoming, Schomecoming

While I am out of town this weekend, I suggested to my husband that he take the girls to some of the homecoming events like the parade or House Decs. He looked at me like I was crazy. So if you're thinking like him, here are some Homecoming alternatives.

Friday, you can check out Arthur Miller's classic drama All My Sons presented by the Stephens College drama department. at the Macklanburg Playhouse. SHow starts at 7:30pm and general admission tickets are $12.

On Saturday, you can scout out some Halloween costumes or just buy some outrageous clothing from 12pm to 4pm at the Warehouse Theatre (104 Willis). There will be old costumes and vintage clothing for sale with.prices ranging from $1 to $15. All proceeds benefit True North, a local women's shelter, the Stephens Costume Shop and Warehouse Theatre Company's carpet campaign. Contact Katie Huffman at 573-286-3613 for more information.

Or you could head to Stephens College for their celebration of books with author talks and a presentation by Catherine Parisian, editor of The First White House Library entitled: The First White House Library: Reading the Mind of an Age. Passes are $25.

Get in the Halloween mood Saturday night by checking out 5th Wall Productions presentation of suspense master Ira Levin’s play Veronica’s Room at Cafe Berlin. The show starts at 8pm and tickets $7 for general admission. Leave the kiddos at home; this play is for mature audiences only.

After the game excitement dies down it should be safe to head to campus Sunday afternoon at 2pm for a concert by faculty from MU's music department. Head to the Whitmore Recital Hall in the Fine Arts Building for trombone and piano music. $5 donation. If singing is more your thing, the University Singers will be performing at First Baptist Church, at1112 E. Broadway at 4pm, also for a $5 donation.

Date Night Upgrade

Last week this time I was rushing to cook dinner while the girls screamed "hit, hit, hit" and "kick, kick, kick" at each other (their solution to the no hitting/kicking rule). An hour later the husband and I were all gussied up and being driven to a wine dinner at Les Bourgeois. Suffice to say, it was not our normal date night.

The Cinderella moment came about after talking with Missouri Wines about my lack of knowledge when it come to wines made right here in Missouri. They were nice enough to hook me up with Les Bourgeois so I could attend their wine dinner and learn more.

We started off the evening with an appetizer selection paired with the Les Bourgeois LBV Brut and Winemaker's Select Rose. I was pleasantly surprised by the Brut. I am no champagne snob, in fact I usually prefer Cava, but I do tend to find most American sparklers to be too cloying. Their LBV Brut is one I would gladly buy and give as gifts. Unfortunately, I am not seeing it on their website so I hope it is still for sale or reappearing soon. Part of the appetizers spread was a selection of cured meat which contained some of the first meats cured in house. I love that their chef is taking that on.

Soon it was time to sit down to a three course meal. I won't taunt you by describing in depth all the courses but there were a few standouts. The second course was a bacon wrapped ballontine stuffed with chestnuts. My dish was perfectly moist and I was savoring those chestnuts The skill with which the dish was executed makes me want to head back to the bistro so I can try their "pigs in a blanket" and see what they can do with duck. Of course, I may have liked it so much because both the husband and I were big fans of the wine it was paired with: the Collector's Series Chambourcin. It not only complemented the rabbit well but it managed to be rich without being overpowering. It has a kind of stealth depth to it. The more we drank it, the more we liked it.

Another standout was the course of Missouri Beef done two ways. I believe the heavy hitter was meant to be the wellington with foie gras pate but I actually enjoyed the tenderloin wiht mushrooms and a norton wine reduction more. When quality meat is well cooked, it doesn't need much to dress it up. Naturally this was served with their 2008 Norton. I admit it, I didn't know a thing about Norton grapes before the wine dinner. I loved drinking a wine that was 100% grapes grown less than five miles from where I was sitting. And it tasted wonderful too. As a bonus we were drinking it out of glasses that Riedel recently released specifically for Norton wines.

All too soon it was time to head out to the bluff to drink port and eat desserts. I admit I snagged the last of the Chambourcin to drink. Les Bourgoeis does not currently have any wine dinners planned but you can try variations of the dishes at the Blufftop Bistro. And the AFrame currently has the Chamboucin if you're just looking to soak up some scenery and drink some great wine.

A few months ago, while buying cards at The Butterfly Tattoo, I noticed a new breakfast place a few doors down on 9th. I made a mental note to check it out but forgot until I saw a human billboard waving on Broadway pointing the way to the same place I had noticed: D&D Cafe and Catering.

Since it's only open from 7-3, it still took me a few weeks to check it out. I love breakfast (in spite of not being an egg fan), but it's one of the few meals we never eat out. During the week we're too busy trying to get up, dressed, and out the door to preschool and on the weekends we take turns sleeping in.

I finally decided I would just have to tackle this review on my own. So this morning, after dropping the terrible two off, I rushed over to enjoy my first kid free breakfast in years. Of course the egg issue meant I had to skip over most of the menu (though the Ehern Omelet did tempt me (philly meat, onions, peppers, cheese, topped with gravy). As a ChickFilA lover, I had to order D&D's version of their breakfast sanwich, the fried chicken biscuit.

And boy was it good. What's not to like about a fresh fried piece of chicken on a homemade biscuit? The chicken was so devoid of grease that I could almost fool myself into thinking it was healthy. And the biscuit tasted just like mom used to make with just a hint of baking soda. The only thing that would have made the meal perfect was some real butter or jelly instead of the processed stuff in little packets. If you haven't tried jelly on a chicken biscuit, you're missing out.

I rarely recommend a place after trying just one dish but I was impressed with the from scratch attitude of the owner and chef. I mean, a place that deep fries Twinkies to order has got to be good right? After checking the menu out, I can't wait to go back for lunch or some pulled pork eggrolls. And next time I will definitely be getting dessert. In addition to the deep fried Twinkies they do deep fried candy bars, cake balls, pies, and cookies (check out their menu.) And the prices are reasonable too: biscuits and Gravy: $3.50, omelets: $5-$6, sandwiches with chips: $4-$6.

Oh what lovely weather. The leaves are changing and the weather is cool enough to break out some jackets and maybe even a scarf.

Of course, the big gig in town is the Citizen Jane Film Festival. In addition to the films, there are some cool parties to check out. And in case you didn't see it. Inside Columbia is running a deal today where you can buy a ticket to the opening night film for $5.

But if you're not in the movie mood, here are some other ideas for the weekend.

It's chestnut season and you can get your fill at the Missouri Chestnut Roast taking place Saturday in New Franklin at the MU Horticulture and Agroforestry Research Center . The center is home to the Hickman House, one of Missouri's oldest standing brick homes. It underwent a complete renovation last year. During the festival you can tour it and the surrounding farm. Other activities include food and wine tasting booths, cooking demonstrations, children's games, and a chestnut roasting booth with fresh roasted chestnuts. There will also be Missouri-produced grilled elk, buffalo and beef products for sale.

Saturday morning head out to Stephens lake Park for the Walk Me Home... to a place where I belong 5K. The walk was established to raise funds for and awareness of foster kids. If you would like to join the walk, registration starts at 9am and the walk begins at 10am. If you just want to cheer everyone on, bring the whole family because there will be free entertainment and cotton candy. Get more details here.

Sunday, from 12-4pm, get in the Halloween spirit by taking your pets to Lizzi and Rocco's for pet photos and a costume contest. And yes, all kind of pets are welcome. There will be fall-themed pet photos as a fundraiser for Columbia Second Chance and the Central Missouri Humane Society. For $10 you a 5x7 and sheet of wallets. At 2pm the Costume Contest will be judged. Entry into the contest is a $3 donation to the CMHS. Fabulous prizes for pets and owners will be awarded.

Fun Food Events (for when dinner at { } isn't cutting it)

As we move towards the holidays, there will be more and more fun events featuring food and wine to attend around town. Here are a few upcoming ones that I am attending or hope to attend!

This Thursday Les Bourgeois is having a Haunt Cuisine wine dinner. The evening starts with an appetizer reception paired with Winemaker's Select Rose and Les Bourgeois Brut, followed by a three course seated dinner guided by Chef Aaron Wells-Morgan and Winemaker Cory Bomgaars featuring Missouri Beef, and ending with an arrangement of desserts and gourmet cheeses paired with Dessert Wines. Guests will receive a complimentary Norton Riedel glass furnished by Missouri Wines (this glass will instantly become the fanciest I own and therefore is sure to be broken by the girls before I get to drink out of it.) Hurry and buy any remaining tickets here.

Next week you can feel virtuous while drinking wine at the Wine and Art 2010 event benefiting Missouri Rain, mid-Missouri’s only HIV & STD advocacy and prevention organization. The event takes place October 21, from 5:30 to 7:30pm at Orr Street Studios. There will be a wine tasting from Les Bourgeois, hors d’oeuvres from the University Club, and a wine toss. And there will also be a live and a silent auction with coveted foodie items like dinner for 10 catered by celebrity chef, Brook Harlan and a case of wine from the collection of Dr. John DeSpain. Tickets can be purchased at the Missouri Rain site.

On Tuesday the 26th, Sycamore is hosting a Tallgrass beer dinner. Of course there's no tickets left, you have to buy the hour they go on sale, but little known secret: you can go sit at the bar and try the beers. And ogle all the lucky stiff eating the delicious food that comes out of the Sycamore kitchen.

On the 28th, there's another Thursday event (what's up with Thursday in this town?) is Porch Light Story Telling at Cafe Berlin. Every other Thursday night the kitchen and bar open at 7:30pm and stories begin at 8pm. What a great family night that would be. Except my kids go to bed at seven. Anyone want to go with me to munch on some food and listen to some tales?

Monday Giveaway : Healthy Beef Cookbook and Steak Rub

One of the things I love about Twitter is the chance to connect with local businesses on a personal level. I was having so much fun tweeting recipes and local activities with Whitney Wallace from the Missouri Beef Council that we decided to meet up for coffee and chat about Missouri. I love getting the inside scoop from a native.

I left with a craving for steak and this cookbook:

The Healthy Beef Cookbook : Authored by Chef Richard Chamberlain (owner of Chamberlain's Steak and Chop House in Dallas) and Betsy Hornick, M.S., R.D.

The Beef Checkoff Program (a national effort that the Missouri Beef Industry Council contributes to) joined forces with the The American Dietetic Association to produce this compilation of more than 130 recipes featuring healthy cuts of beef. It also includes nutrition information and cooking techniques.

I have to admit, since we moved here and started visiting the farmer's market on a regular basis, we've been eating a lot more beef. It's hard to resist when it's so readily available. So I was happy to find some low calorie recipes (75% have less than 400 calories per serving.)

The Beef Council is offering a fellow meat eater a copy of the cookbook as well. You will also receive a bottle of their steak rub (which I have been using on my hamburgers and brats). Just leave a comment with your email or Twitter handle (so I can contact you if you are the winner, the book and rub will be mailed to you.) For fun, tell me where you stand on the chili debate: beans or no beans.

Weekend Guide : Art, Pumpkins, and zombie proms. It's definitely Fall.

This weekend may be the best of both worlds. The leaves are changing and the pumpkins are abundant, but the weather is going to be in the eighties so no coats required. Some of you may bemoan the lack of chilly weather but I say embrace it. The cold will be here soon enough. Just please don't make your kids dress up in warm clothes or their Halloween costumes for pictures at the pumpkin patch.

It's the last Artrageous Friday of the year, so take a stroll through downtown. Or if you can ride the free trolley provided by Central Trust and Investment.. Print out this map for the stops. Special events include the opening reception of the 14th annual exhibition of contemporary fiber art by members of the Columbia Weavers & Spinners Guild from 6-9 pm at PS Gallery. Scarves will be sale benefiting the Show Me Healthy Women program at the Elie Fischel. Don't forget that Artrageous activities continue through Saturday and Sunday.

Sometimes you worry that things aren't going to live up to the hype, but everyone promises me that the Hartsburg Pumpkin Festival is worth the trip. And I do love pumpkins, hay rides, and apple butter. Who's been? Does it live up to the hype? Should we go on Saturday or Sunday? I have heard that the traffic can be brutal so map out some alternate routes to Hartsburg (the Tribune had Pumpkin Festival ads running with some suggested routes.)

If you;re looking for something different for date night Saturday night, check out the opening of Zombie Prom at William Woods University. The show's description: Set at Enrico Fermi High in the 1950s, “Zombie Prom” tells the story of Toffee, a pretty senior who has fallen for the class bad boy against her family’s wishes. When they force her to end the romance, the heartbroken bad boy heads for the nuclear waste dump, and returns glowing and determined to take Toffee to the prom. Tickets are $11 for adults; $9 for senior citizens (62 and up); and $5 for children between the ages of 6 and 12. No children under 6 allowed.

The warm weather this weekend will be perfect for the One Sky, One World Kite Flying festival on Sunday at Cosmo-Bethel park from 10am to 4pm. At this free event, there will be Chinese Waist Drum performances and Chinese kite tying and flying demonstrations. Check out the full schedule here.

Sunday afternoon immerse yourself in the music of Sondheim by attending Side by Side at the Rhynsburger Theatre. The show features more than two dozen songs from about a dozen shows. Tickets: are $14, students and seniors pay $10. More information can be found here.

Planning the Perfect Missouri Minibreak

For some reason, the husband and I always vacation in the Fall. We might visit family in the summer. But if you're talking a full on vacation, we jet off when the leaves are turning and the election ads are heavy. We've gone places where it's the offseason (Italy, Vancouver). We've gone places where it's high season (New England). And we've gone places where it doesn't matter (Hawaii, thanks to a Twitter contest from Marriott).

But what we have never done, is taken the girls. Unless you count their in utero leaf peeping.

You see, this is a a vacation for us. From them. And we figure a playground in Oahu is the same as a playground in Columbia. I have always walked out the door without an ounce of guilt and usually nary a phone call (no judging, they're in good hands with either my parents or my inlaws). So we didn't plan to take the girls to Portland in a few weeks. Guilt free.

Until the girls started asking to go on a vacation. I'm not a fan of whatever kids show put the idea in their head but they are insistent that they need to go somewhere. Besides the park. So before the insanity of the holidays start but after our Portland trip (since the focus of that is beer and relaxation), I am planning a little weekend vacation. Which will be our first family vacation, so the pressure is on to make it one full of memories.

I want the girls to look back and this and say "Oh I loved doing that!" I may even make a scrapbook.
Since we already took a whirlwind trip to St. Louis, I figured it was time to tackle Kansas City. I was there just last weekend for convention so I scoped out shops, restaurants, and some activities. Definitely on deck: a tour of Boulevard (what? Our kids love breweries. Seriously, as long as peacocks aren't snapping at them.), a visit to the Hallmark Visitors Center, a family art session at Hallmark's Kaleidoscope (free!), a drive along the Spirit of Kansas City byway.

Now I need your help: what would make our trip the best? Are there kid friendly restaurants we absolutely need to visit? Where should we stay? Is there a scenic drive or should we just shoot up I70? This has got to be good. My twins' happy childhood memories depend on it. Fail and I will send you their therapy bills.

Restaurant Review : CC's City Broiler

I'm sure you've heard of the phrase "champagne tastes on a beer budget". Well I've got steak tastes on a burger budget. So living in Missouri is sheer torture. All this great beef and me with no money to buy it. In fact, I think the last time I had a good steak was when Isle of Capri had me out for dinner.

That's not to say we haven't tried. Twice we had tried to take out of town guests to CC's City Broiler only to be turned away or given a two hour wait time. I tried to call for reservations once only to be told haughtily that they don't take them. After I took to Twitter to complain, I began to plot a way to eat there. If they were trying to make me want it more by making it unavailable, their plot was working. I had to find a way to eat their steak.

Then last week the stars aligned. While I huffed and puffed my way through my group workout, the topic turned to CC's latest dinner for two deal. You have probably seen those coupons they put out periodically where you get a certain set menu for two for a price. I am always leery of them, assuming there is a hidden catch. But we had fmaily in town, a weeknight free, and my husband is able to be home right at five some nights. So it was on like Donkey Kong.

We rushed right over and were there at five thirty gaining us one of a few open tables left (who are these Comoians eating steak at five? Many people were midway through their meals!) After being handed our gigantic menus and a card bearing our waiter's name, we handed over our coupon and ordered. Even with our shields up we were suckered into ordering a side dish each not on the coupon. Side dishes we definiteyl would have gone without had we known the orgy of food awaiting us.

Our meal started off with their onion rings complete with dipping sauce (thousand island and russian dressing combined me thinks, but oh so delicious). After that our chopped salads arrived. We both went for broke and requested blue cheese dressing. When I say we could have easily made a meal of the salads, I am not exaggerating in the least. It's not that the salad itself is anything exciting. though I did love the cucumber wrapper, but the blue cheese dressing and fried onion toppings, oh yes. I could barely eat any of the sourdough bread that arrived along with it.

Soon our steaks arrived, along with my spinach and mushrooms and the husband's truffled sweet potatoes. Along with the steaks we both got fried lobster tails. Honestly, I was so full at this point that I didn't even touch the lobster. The husband took one for the team and took a few bites, sighing "lobster should not be deep fried." And according to him, indeed it should not.

The steaks, on the other hand, were perfect. My rare steak was actually cooked rare. A rarity, if you will. They definitely did not need th bacon wrapped around it. The quality of the meat would shine better without it. Even as fabulous as it was, I could only finish half of it. Fortunately, our waiter was happy to pack it up along with our barely touched sides.

The final bill came to right around $70 with the coupon. Which considering we also got a decent bottle of wine (2007 Spanish tempranillo), we felt like was a good deal. You can order a quality $30 steak that comes with all the accompaniments (don't get suckered into ordering sides like us) and get it cooked perfectly. Not a bad deal. Just get there before six.

Edited to add: I thought they had great service which is rare in this town. Our water glasses were constantly filled. Our food was brought on time, hot, and to the right person. Our waiter was personable and fun to chat with and was there when we needed him. We never had to pour our own wine and we never felt rushed. These are small things but they added to our enjoyment of the meal. My only quibble was the sneaky upselling. I understand his motivations but he actually would have gotten a bigger tip had he not done it (we planned to tip off the original amount not the discount.)

Weekend Guide : Everything Besides Roots and Blues

In case you live under a rock, Columbia's Roots and Blues festival is this weekend. If you want to cheer on Scott from Show Me Eats in his inaugural cookoff run or see some music, check out the website here. But if you're one of those people who resents the intrusion of downtown, here are some alternatives for your weekend.

Saturday you can get your soil tested, take a mule cart ride, get lost in a corn maze, and have your shirt eaten by a goat (petting zoos have hidden dangers) at the MU South Farm Showcase. This free event also features live music and engineering demonstrations. Bring ten dollars and a 6" deep sample (taken from 6 random spots and mixed) if you want your lawn or garden soil tested.

If you prefer to get out of town completely, you could spend your Saturday at the 8th annual Augusta Bottoms Beer Festival in Augusta, Missouri. From 12pm - 5pm there will be live music and beer tastings. Your $25 ticket also gets you a commemorative glass.

Sunday night, head to Ragtag to see the new series, Employee of the Month. Each month a different employee will be picking a favorite film for the big screen. Showing starts at right, donations are accepted.

Lots of questions on my mind these days. I actually planned to write a post about some new food spots in town but all three (!) of the places I tried didn't open until eleven. Come on eateries. Take pity on us parents with half day preschool!!

So instead, I need your help on ideas for future throwdowns. So tell me Como, where do you go for...
Pizza? (besides Shakespeare's)
Desserts, especially cupcakes?
Italian food?
Wings?

And bonus question: what restaurant to you consider to be quintessentially Como?

A Perfect Fall Day in Columbia

Perhaps a silent beacon went out or perhaps all of our friends and family are secret leaf peepers, but somehow we have three separate visits planned for October. Even though we have lived here a year, I still feel like there's a lot I don't know about Columbia (especially Fall activities since we were still unpacking through December). So I need your help: what happens on your perfect Fall day in Columbia?

Weekend Guide : Beer, pets, and museums... oh my!

It feels more like summer than Fall in Como but don't let that stop you from getting out to some of these fun events this weekend. Just leave the scarves at home. Just because the calendar says September doesn't mean it's going to be cold outside.

Tonight (Thursday) you can explore the museums and galleries of Mizzou at the sixth annual MU Campus Gallery and Museum Crawl. Starting at 4:00pm and continuing until 7:00pm, attendees can experience a wide variety of exhibitions and activities. Refreshments will be available at each location. This event is free and if you visit all eight organizations and get your Crawl postcard stamped you are eligible to win prizes including T-shirts, art posters, free do-it-yourself classes. Friday night, gather up the family, housemates, or just yourself and head to Lowry Mall for Mizzou on the Mall. There will be music, snacks, and Mizzou treats (while supplies last). I also heard something about a photo booth. This event is free and runs from 8pm to 11pm. Full details here.

Saturday is Paws in the Park at Stephens Lake Park.The run kicks off with a 5k at 9am (check in is at 8am, register online here). There will also be demonstrations and dog contests, animals available for adoption, pet items for sale, face painting, and raffles.

Also on Saturday is Jefferson City's Oktoberfest in the historical Munichberg neighborhood. This free event runs from 10am to 6pm. There will be German music, dancing, a dachshund derby and costume contest, kids activates as well as a beer garden and German food for sale.

Sunday evening, if you're of the fairer sex, you can attend the second ladies night at the HyVee on Conley Road. From 6:30pm until 8pm in the spirits department, vendors will be pouring samples of their products and there will be door prizes give out every fifteen minutes.

Guest Post: Riding the Bus in Columbia

Today we have a special guest post from David Van Dyke. Instead of driving, he chooses to commute via the Columbia Transit System. In his spare time, he saves the rain forest. Just kidding about that last part but he really does ride the bus to work. Be sure to check out his blog and follow him on Twitter.

The first time I rode the bus in Columbia, Missouri, I got on the wrong one. A commute that should have taken me about 25 minutes took more than an hour. Fast forward just a few months later: I was running through a ditch, flagging a bus down on Providence, and arguing with the driver that he took a wrong turn on his route. Ah, the confidence of a seasoned CoMo bus rider. But that confidence only comes with experience.

All you need to know to ride the bus in CoMo is where to get on and when.
The information is actually easy to find, my early problems were because I was
using a route that had a daily detour when MU was in session (the argument was because I had to remind the driver that school was no longer in session). Columbia Transit provides good access to maps and schedules. You can get online maps and schedules, or you can pick up printed ones at Wabash Station. You can even catch instant updates on routes by following @Columbia_MO_Bus on Twitter.

Once you’ve found your route, the schedule gives certain time points. But there are many other “blue sign” stops along each route. So if the 104 West route will be at the Library at 8:50 am and HyVee at 9am, you know you can pick up the bus at the blue sign stop at the Broadway Shopping Center about 8:55am. More importantly, the bus will pick you up on ANY CORNER of a regular route. Just be on the correct side of the street, and wave the driver down well in advance to give the bus time to stop safely. If the closest route to you is further than you want to walk, the buses have easy-to-use bike racks so you can bike to your closest stop.

Though they will pick you up on any corner, you can only be dropped off at a blue sign stop. Pull the red cord by your seat, and the driver will stop at the next blue sign. Sometimes they call out the stops, sometimes you can even understand what they’re saying, but it’s up to you to pay attention when you’re getting close to your stop.

Probably the most intimidating part of bus riding in CoMo is the transfer. Columbia Transit uses a route system that brings almost all the buses back to Wabash Station every 40 minutes. This has its advantages and disadvantages, but with a little experience the transfer can be just a routine part of your bus ride.

The first thing to know about a transfer is you need to tell the driver when you get on your first bus. As soon as your fare is processed, the driver can print you a transfer ticket (it’s free). If your bus is running late, they may ask you which bus you are transferring to, so it can be held for you. When you reach Wabash Station, find your second bus (signs identify where the buses will park and the buses have signs on them too). The transfer ticket is your fare on the second bus. I’ve got some good stories about being transferred in the middle of an intersection, but that’s rare.

The bus costs $1 for an adult to ride. It’s 50¢ for kids, college students with an ID, senior citizens and people with a financial need. You can buy unlimited rides for 30 days, or you can buy (like I do) 25 rides for $20.00. You need exact fare when you get on a bus. As I mentioned earlier, a transfer is free.

So there you go, where to get on the bus, when and how much. It sounds like a lot of information just to ride the bus. And if you own a car, it sounds like quite an inconvenience to bother with the bus, I’m sure. But not only is it a responsible choice, I have found that I greatly enjoy my time on the bus. Some days, it’s the only peace and quiet I get. You can ride the bus in this town from Rock Bridge High School all the way out to the Boone County Fairgrounds, or from the Columbia Mall all the way out to Discovery Park. You’ll have to walk a little bit, but the buses are always very cool in the summer and warm in the winter.

If you’re new to Columbia Transit, now is the perfect time to start! New routes went into effect on Monday August 2, so everyone is out there learning the new routes and times! No one will know it’s your first time… I hope to see you on the bus!

The Case of the $4 Cookie : Review of Red and Moe

As soon as I heard about Red and Moe, I was already half in love with it. The menu sounded great and the downtown location is just a few minutes away from us. Add in their sustainability commitment and their intention to source as many local ingredients as possible and well, I practically needed a fainting couch.

After trying to plot a way into their family and friends opening, I had to settle for going the first day they were open to the general public. We piled the twins into the car and set out for an early supper.

Since we're new to Columbia, this was the first time I had been in the space (though I had noticed the cool tile work on my many walks down Ninth). As I did in my review of Kampai Sushi, I have to rave a little about the space. The interior is very airy and light. And he color scheme is muted with the main color punches coming from the art on the walls and the racks in the open kitchen showcasing your meal's ingredients.

Even though I had seen the menu online, the prices did give me a little bit of sticker shock. What can I say? I am a Comoian now and am used to everything being cheap. I may have stuttered a little when the woman at the counter told me the cookies were $4. We settled on their Gruyere cheese, prosciutto ham, sliced tomato and rosemary pizza ($15) and a beer for each of us (they have one tap that rotates (Tin Mill October fest currently) and a few bottled beers from Missouri breweries and New Belgium ($3.50-$4.50)).

We were both very happy with our choice. The twins were not as thrilled, even though we sold it as ham pizza. The husband thought it was slightly too salty but I understand why they pile on the prosciutto. People want to see where their $15 is going. Salty or not, it easily surpassed any pizza we had previously had in Como. And made me mourn summer since splitting one or two along with a bottle of white wine would be a pleasant way to pass a hot evening.

In spite of everything I loved, I still had a few misgivings. So I headed back Wednesday for lunch. Since I was running late, I had to order my salad to go. I ordered one of the $4 cookies to eat while I waited. When I had expressed shock at the price on our first visit, the person at the counter assured me that they were worth the price because of the ingredients. I didn't taste them. The cookie was slightly overcooked and perhaps that masked the quality of the chocolate but it just wasn't worth $4.

Because of the to go factor I passed up my first salad choice, the "simply the best tomato salad, for fear it wouldn't travel well. Instead I ordered the "quinoa salad with tomatoes, cucumbers, olives, sweet peppers, feta, oregano and red wine vinaigrette". I was surprised when it was brought out to me in a small soup container. And I was even more surprised to find the container about 3/4ths full. Call me cheap, but for $9 I expect more than two cups of salad.

I will give Red and Moe this, the salad had a great flavor and I have been trying to figure out how to duplicate the vinaigrette ever since lunch. But the quality of the ingredients was not what I was expecting. The olives tasted like they came from a can and the feta was sparse. Again, not worth $9.

Overall, I am a fan of Red and Moe and have already suggested it to a few people. But I have reservations about the viability of restaurant that is closed three days of the week (including a weekend day) and whose prices will keep its audience small. Would love to know what you think.

Date Night : Les Bourgeois A-Frame

It took us awhile but we finally made it out to Les Bourgeois last weekend. And we immediately kicked ourselves for not going sooner. The A-Frame is such a great place to chill out and drink in some scenery along with some wine. Really, doesn't this look like the best date night ever?

Apologies to all those couples whose date nights may have been made a little less romantic by bringing our twins along on our date. They even drew the attention of two twitter friends making us feel like celebrities. Or just people with loud kids. But we chose to believe we're (in)famous.

We parents have to take romance where we can get it. And the A-Frame is perfect for a family outing. There's the outdoors to keep the kiddos amused; there's food available for purchase; and of course wine to drink when you're kids are screaming. When we there on a Sunday afternoon there .was even music to drown out our kids. Excellent!

The A-Frame is open through the end of October (and nice weather weekends in November. There will be live music every Saturday through October 19th. This weekend is their Crush Festival from 2-6pm.
